Injectables

If you’d like to restore youthful fullness to your face, enjoy plump lips, enhance shallow contours or soften facial wrinkles, dermal fillers may be the answer. Dermal fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the benefits of a surgical facelift without the downtime. Although they can’t help with excess sagging skin, these soft tissue fillers can add more volume and provide results at a lower cost than surgery. Dermal fillers are often used in conjunction with other skin rejuvenation treatments such as injections of botulinum toxin. There are many different brands and types of dermal fillers. Those offered at United Dermatology Associates are listed below.

Belotero

belotero3-960x300_c-2Belotero Balance is a prescription injection that is approved to temporarily smooth out and fill in moderate-to-severe nasolabial folds (the folds or wrinkles that go from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth). It creates an elegant finishing touch to your appearance, filling small gaps beneath the skin’s surface and improving the appearance of stubborn etched-in smile lines and vertical lip lines above and around the lips. Belotero Balance is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable filler that completely integrates into the skin tissue and specifically treats moderate-to-severe etched-in lines and wrinkles such as vertical lip lines above and around the lips. »Visit Website

Juvederm Voluma

Before-and-After-Oxnard-Ventura-JUVÉDERM-VOLUMA™-XC-2The loss of midface volume is one of the hallmarks of facial aging. This occurs in varying degrees of severity, and can lead to significant changes in the facial appearance. One of the most noticeable changes is the loss of cheekbone definition. Historically, this was addressed with surgery to tighten the overlying skin and lift the deeper soft tissues. More recently, volumizing fillers have been used to provide a similar ‘lift’ without surgery. The goal is to restore volume in the midface to create a natural, youthful face.

Juvederm Voluma is the first filler formulated with lidocaine that is FDA approved to restore age-related volume changes in the cheeks. Unlike other fillers commonly used to treat the midface, Voluma is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. HA fillers are made from long chains of sugars that occur naturally in the skin. Juvederm Voluma is unique in that the HA is cross-linked through a process called Vycross that helps provide an excellent lifting capacity. This special cross-linking also helps to avoid degradation, making Voluma last almost twice as long as other fillers. Studies have shown that it can last up to 2 years. And since it is an HA filler, it can be molded and shaped into the desired contour after injection. »Visit Website

Radiesse

radiesseresults-300x169Collagen is what gives volume, flexibility and strength to healthy, young skin. As a part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity – all of which rob your skin of its youthful, fresh appearance. Ideal wrinkle reduction is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. Upon injection, RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. But what’s unique about RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of RADIESSE Volumizing Filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients. »Visit Website

Restylane-Silk-before-and-afterLike other areas of the face, the lips and skin surrounding the mouth show signs of aging as an individual gets older. This often results in lip thinning, lost shape and an increase in vertical lines above the lip.

Sculptra

sculptraimages3-300x175Sculptra is different from traditional fillers in the way that it works in your skin. Traditional fillers provide immediate volume in the area treated, whereas Sculptra is a facial injectable that works gradually in a series of treatments–on average, three injection sessions over a few months — for a subtle, more youthful looking appearance. The active ingredient—poly-L-lactic acid— has been used safely for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999 in over 30 countries. This material is gradually reabsorbed by the body, but it works to improve one’s appearance by stimulating the skin to produce collagen. Optimal results are seen within 6-9 months. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have developed over time. »Visit Website

Kybella

KYBELLA-Patient-Before-and-After-Side-View-300x178KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) injection, also known as ATX-101, is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness due to submental fat. Our office was honored to be a sponsor of an event that was put on this morning by several teachers in our community. "Shannon's Run" is an event dedicated to the memory of Shannon Mabe and Melanoma Awareness. Her precious family was there along with some of the teachers she worked with at Donna Shepard Intermediate School. Her husband Chris Mabe spoke about the importance of getting a yearly skin check and how something tiny turned into something deadly. Thank you to Lesley Greenwood Burke for organizing this event and to everyone who participated today -- our hope is that together we can educate our community about skin cancer awareness! ... If you've been putting off getting your skin checked, maybe this story will convince you. These pictures show what our patient looked like during rounds of chemo, and the story attached was written by his wife. These are regular folks, no family history of skin cancer, and the "spot" was barely visible. They are actual patients at UDA, and thankfully she knew about a symptom that most people don't realize ....

"A friend of mine who works in the marketing department at United Dermatology recently asked if I could write a blog about my husband’s journey battling melanoma. May is Melanoma Awareness Month. The month is half over and I have yet to find the time to sit down and address this. It is bad timing for us. We were in the middle of the most critical business dealings of our lives and fighting off a case of pneumonia at the same time. He managed to get to the business deal done and get well just in time for a trip we have planned. We are in the hotel and I am awake early (still on Texas time) and this promise to my friend is still nagging at me. It is important. You see, I believe that a random conversation I had with a coworker could very well have saved my husband’s life and if someone randomly happens to be reading this and learns something from it potentially another life could be saved as well.
On that day some of my coworkers were hanging out in my office and one girl was talking about her feet swelling because she had some lymph nodes removed due to a place where she had melanoma on her leg. I was curious and asked her how she knew to get the spot on her leg checked. “What did it look like?” I wanted to know the scoop. Her spot sounded like what you would expect, very dark, irregular edges and changing. One thing she said was, “All I know is if it itches you should get it checked.” I had never heard that before.
Fast forward to my husband’s story. He had just been through another medical battle with heart disease. Unfortunately he has it in his family. At age 48 we discovered his main artery was 100% blocked and another artery was 75% blocked. The first surgery to put in stents was unsuccessful. A second attempt with another surgeon was luckily a success. However he had a rare complication in the artery in his leg that they go in and it required repair. After this healed, the same thing happen in his other leg (from the second surgery). They repaired it but the pseudo-aneurysm was too large and eventually he ended up with a mass in his leg the size of a grapefruit. He was under the knife again with a vascular surgeon. Eventually the leg healed, his heart felt like new and we were on to a new chapter and ready to enjoy life again.
Well, it turns out if it weren’t for bad luck at this time in our lives my sweet hubby would have none. We had moved on with our lives. Working very hard, raising kids, running a hectic sports schedule etc. One day he says the middle of his back really itches and asks me to look at it. Seeing absolutely nothing I scratch his back and send him on his way. A week or so later the same thing. And then again…I tell him he’s crazy there is nothing there. A few days later he does it again. This time I can see the tiniest spot. It did not look anything like you would expect. It is the size of the tip of a pen, pink, round and very, very itchy. I tell him I don’t know but I heard once that if it itches you should get it checked. Amazingly he calls that day and makes an appointment. About a week later the dermatologist assures him it looks fine but biopsies it anyway to be safe. A few days later came the call. It’s melanoma. This not the cut it off and everything will be fine type of skin cancer. It is deadly and fast moving. Surgery is scheduled right away to remove the spot and a large area around it and a few lymph nodes under each arm to see if it has spread. Remember what I said about his luck? It spread. That is how fast this is. In that amount of time! It had literally just surfaced and he had it checked. His survival rate went from around almost 70% to a 24% chance of survival with that news. He went back for another surgery to have all of the lymph nodes removed from under his arm which left him very bruised and swollen and required drains for a few weeks. He was told regular chemo is not effective and the standard course of treatment was interferon for a year which would have harsh side effects, his brain would be very foggy and mental side effects such as depression were quite common and that this would only increase his chance of survival by about 5%. All he could think of was the fact that his family depended on him and being a small business owner the families of his employees also depended on him. That is my husband. Unselfish, hardworking and dedicated is putting it mildly. This won’t work. We research. We find an oncologist who finds a study for us. They are making great progress with immunotherapy but it is still experimental. He is lucky enough to get accepted into a study they are doing at Baylor with a new drug called Ipilimumab (Yervoy). It is given like Chemo at the cancer center over the course of several months. The study had several arms and he was put in the arm which gave the very largest dose of this drug. This was a bit unfortunate because the side effects at this level were huge. It caused many inflammatory issues which were different depending on the patient. For him it was some of the digestive issues but he ended up with the worst case of hives covering his entire body you can ever imagine. He was covered in huge red welts from head to toe. He wanted to crawl out of his skin which was on fire, hot, itchy and painful. This was a low point for sure. They were able to calm it with high doses of steroids which wasn’t ideal but was necessary. He gained weight and became very bloated around his face and neck because he had to stay on the steroids for about 6 months which is much longer than he or the oncologist would have liked but it was necessary. He seemed to be improving. His thyroid was damaged and must be controlled with medicine but slowly and surely he gained his health back for the most part. They had to stop his arm of the study because they lost too many people due to the harsh side effects at that dose. The study is not fully completed yet but we recently found out they have approved the drug he was on for stage 3 and 4 patients. We cannot begin to tell you how grateful we are that he made it through and that he got this drug. The research is very promising but there is still much to learn.
Fast forward to now. 4 years and still cancer free! Thank God. He gets scans every 6 months and is relatively healthy. The gratitude we feel is enormous. We are about to begin our retirement and move to be near our boys who are grown and my family. We are so grateful for every day and every moment we have with the people we love. If you take nothing else away from this story please remember to get anything remotely suspicious at all on your skin checked IMMEDIATELY. Melanoma is no joke, it is fast and very deadly. If you catch it early there are resources to help you. If it ends up being nothing, be filled with gratitude. Eat healthy, exercise, wear sunscreen and get your skin checked every year by a dermatologist! Enjoy your day with your friends and family and stay healthy!"
